A new version of the ISO standard 18436-2 was published in the middle of 2014.
The changes with the greatest impact can be summarized as follows:
– The number of questions in the CAT I exam has changed from 50 to 60 questions
– The passing grade for the exam has been changed from 75% to 70% for all categories
MIBoC’s founder and managing director; Jason Tranter, is a member of the ISO TC 108 / SC 5 committee that voted to make these changes. The rationale behind the changes was that other parts of ISO 18436 (ultrasound, etc.) use 60 questions and 70% pass grade and that there should be consistency. The aim of the ISO committee was definitely not to make it easier or harder to become certified.
What does this mean for the MIBoC Certification Exams?
The MIBoC scheme is based on ISO 18436-2 and our Scheme Committee has therefore approved changes to our certification exams to reflect the changes to this ISO standard.
These changes will come into effect from January 1st, 2015.
Using the detailed exam question analysis data from our psychometric processes, we have modified our exams for all categories such that the overall proportion of candidates who pass our exams does not change greatly. In other words, the person who previously just passed our exam (at 75%), should still just pass the new exam (at 70%).
CAT I exams have also been modified to include 60 questions instead of 50.
Any candidate sitting the certification exam from January 1st, 2015 will sit the new version of the exam and be graded against the new passing score.
It is important to understand that, in line with the intention of the ISO committee, these changes will not mean that it becomes easier or more difficult to pass the exam.
