Distance Learning & Certification Questions

Do you have questions about Mobius Institute Distance Learning or Certification?

Here are some of the most common questions and answers. If you don't find the answer to your question below, please contact us.

Basic and Intermediate vibration courses vs. CAT I, II, II?

Certified courses: The Cat I, II and III vibration courses, with certification and mentoring options, follow the ISO 18436-2:2003 standard and the ASNT SNT-TC-1A Recommended Practice. The eLearning versions of therse courses contain our latest and most sophisticated simulations along with professional video content. These courses are available via the Web, LMS, corporate LMS, CD and in live classroom settings either on-site or publicly taught.

Basic and Intermediate courses: The "Basic" and "intermediate" vibration courses, without certification option, are based on the iLearnVibration "product" and may be delivered on a time licensed CD, or on the Web (via an LMS) or via your corporate LMS. These extremely popular courses have been available for a number of years, are available in English, Spanish and Chinese languages and are used in leading companies around the globe.

Which course is for you? We firmly stand behind all of our courses and we are confident that you will learn and enjoy learning no matter which set of courses you choose. The certified courses obviously include the option to take a certification exam and add an internationally recognized certification to your resume. The certified courses also include newer higher quality graphics and simulations. If certification is not your prime interest then the Basic and Intermediate courses will certainly go a long way towards helping you understand and enjoy vibration analysis, they have been a staple in the vibration world for a number of years now and are popular for good reason!

How do iLearn products relate to Mobius Institute training courses?

Mobius Institute has sold a popular suite of iLearn products for a number of years. The most popular of these are iLearnVibration and iLearnAlignment. These are CD based training products that include self paced narrated presentations along with quizzes to test your knowledge. The products also contain a number of simulators that you can play with to help you deepen your understanding while also experimenting and having fun. These products are incredibly popular. They have been translated into a number of languages and are used in leading companies around the world.

The only problem is that some individuals purchased one copy of this product and then used it to train boat loads of people. This unintended use of our materials has caused us to reposition the product and deliver it as a time licensed course, either on CD or via the Web. What this means is that there is an expectation that an individual takes the course within a reasonable amount of time, after which the course materials expire. Reference material will remain available via the web and subscriptions to this material may be extended indefinitely. Our goal is to have each student pay for the course in the same way they would pay if they attended a live course in a classroom, which we think is only fair considering the incredible amount of time and investment we have made in making these courses the best available.

Please note the following:

Vibration
The "Basic" and "Intermediate" vibration courses, without certification option, are based on the iLearnVibration "product" and may be delivered on CD, or on the Web (via an LMS) or via your corporate LMS.  The Cat I, II and III vibration courses, with certification and mentoring options, follow a different curricula (ISO and ASNT) and the eLearning versions contain newer and more sophisticated simulations. These are also available via the Web, LMS, corporate LMS, CD and in live classroom settings either on-site or publicly taught.

Alignment
The Introductory Alignment and Master Alignment courses are given in a classroom setting with a live instructor. The instructor may use iLearnAligment during parts of the course. The iLearnAlignment "product" or eLearning course can be delivered on CD or on the Web, which includes the LMS options. It contains the curricula and training materials for both the Introductory and Master levels.

Student registration instructions

We have worked very hard to create training courses that ensure you will learn everything you need to learn to be successful in your work. We believe, however, that you will learn much more if you prepare yourself before the course, and go on learning after the course. So we have created an on-line 'learning zone' where you can watch lessons via your Web browser.
Here is a movie that describes the registration and learning zone process: watch the movie

Before you can watch the presentations, we need you to register in our "Training Management System". We need your contact details for three reasons:

  1. In order to comply with ISO (and ASNT) standards, we must have your full contact details, and we MUST have a statement about your previous training and vibration analysis experience. We cannot certify you unless we have this information. As part of this process you must provide the name that will appear on the certificate.
  2. Certification lasts five years. We must stay in contact to verify that you are still actively involved with vibration analysis; otherwise you must re-take the exam.
  3. We need you to register so that you have an 'account' in our system. Your account login provides access to the 'learning zone'.

There are three steps in the process:

  1. First you must log in to the student registration system. Visit the page: www.mobiusinstitute.com/mi/students_reg.php. Enter your student number into the 'user name' field, and leave the password blank.
  2. At the student registration screen you must complete all of the fields marketed with a red asterisks *. It is essential that you describe in detail your previous vibration analysis and data collection experience. You must also describe your previous education and training. And you must accurately enter the number of months you have been involved with analysis/data collection. It is also important that you return to the registration page if your contact details change.
  3. As part of the registration process you will define a password. You will need that password to modify your student records, and you will need that password to gain access to the "learning zone" at www.mobiusinstitute.com/mi/learningzone.php

Again, here is a movie that describes the registration and learning zone process: watch the movie
We hope you enjoy the training course.

What are the distance learning, eLearning, CD, LMS options?

Mobius Institute offers courses in a variety of formats. There is classroom training, both on-site and public, which should not be hard to understand - but what about all of the eLearning or distance learning options? What do they mean and what are the differences between them? Here is a brief explanation.

Distance learning: This is a general term to describe any formal course that is not taught by an instructor in a classroom. All of the options that follow are forms of distance learning. Often when we speak of distance learning there is an assumption that there is a mentoring option, which means an instructor is available via the web to help you when you need help.

eLearning: This term is interchangeable with distance learning, it refers to a course delivered in digital format, which may include videos, audio, simulators, animations and other electronic media to help you understand the concepts. The only difference is that distance learning often includes a mentoring option from a live instructor.

Web based courses: Many of the Mobius Institute courses are available in digital format which means they may be accessed over the Internet or delivered on a CD. You can enroll in some of our courses right from this website and begin learning immediately! We have a number of ways to deliver this digital content, the method that is best for you will depend mainly on how many people in your facility would like to receive the training and how you are connected to the Internet. Please refer to LMS and "corporate LMS" below. No matter how the digital courses are delivered it must be understood that they are licensed to one person at a time and for a limited time only. The courses contain video, audio, simulations and flash animations. Some of these items may be blocked by your company firewall, others may take some time to view if you have a slow Internet connection. You are welcome to access these courses from the comfort of your own home. If you are just one person wishing to learn, you may purchase a course with your credit card and begin learning right now!

Learning Management System (LMS): This describes a computer based training delivery system that allows an administrator to track a students' prgress through a course. An administrator can see how much time the student spent looking at the course materials, review quiz scores and see how quickly the student is progressing through the course. The Mobius Institute utilizes an LMS called "moodle" www.moodle.org which complies with AICC and SCORM distance learning standards. If you have a number of people in your organization who would like training then this is a good option for you as it allows us to more easily track each students' progress and manage larger numbers of students.

Corporate LMS: Many large companies have their own LMS (Learning Management) systems. If you have a large number of people to train or want to make this training a regular part of your emplopyee improvement efforts, we can discuss loading our course materials into your LMS. Please contact us for more information.

CD based training: As mentioned, our digital course can also be delivered on a CD or DVD. This is the best option for people wioth slow Internet access or firewall issues. Although the course is delivered on a CD it is only intended to be viewed by the individual taking the course and only for the duration of the course.

What are web based courses?

Web based courses: Many of the Mobius Institute courses are available in digital format which means they may be accessed over the Internet or delivered on a CD. You can enroll in some of our courses right from this website and begin learning immediately! We have a number of ways to deliver this digital content, the method that is best for you will depend mainly on how many people in your facility would like to receive the training and how you are connected to the Internet. What happens if I fail the test?

We will help you to identify where your weaknesses lie, and we will direct you to the training that will get you up to speed. We will offer you a second attempt at the exam (there is a charge for this), one month after the initial attempt.

What is an invigilator?

An invigilator is someone who watches students take an exam in order to prevent them from cheating. Another term for this is "proctor." In order to protect the integrity of the certification process, the Mobius Institute utilizes invigilators or proctors to give the exams to eLearning or Distance Learning students. When selecting an invigilator it is important to make sure they are honest and have no interest in whether a student passes an exam or not. Some examples of people who may make good invigilators are training managers or human resources people, university professors or teachers and police or firemen. If you are taking a distance learning or eLearning course from the Mobius Institute and would like to take the certification exam then we will need to discuss the possibility of finding an invigilator to proctor your exam.

What is an LMS?

Learning Management System (LMS): This describes a computer based training delivery system that allows an administrator to track a students' prgress through a course. An administrator can see how much time the student spent looking at the course materials, review quiz scores and see how quickly the student is progressing through the course. If you have a large number of people to train or want to make this training a regular part of your emplopyee improvement efforts, we can discuss loading our course materials into your LMS. Please contact us for more information.

What is distance learning?

In brief, you take the training from the comfort and convenience of your workplace or home. The course is presented to you in digital format either via the Web or from a CD. Some of our courses include a mentoring option which gives you access to our instructors via email or chat. If you take one of the courses with a certification option, you may take the exam at the end of the course. You do not need to travel. You can learn at your own pace. You can get help from our instructors. These benefits of distance learning are making it a popular alternative to classroom training.

What is eLearning?

This term is interchangeable with distance learning, it refers to a course delivered in digital format, which may include videos, audio, simulators, animations and other electronic media to help you understand the concepts. The only difference is that distance learning often includes a mentoring option from a live instructor. Because our eLearning courses are in digital format, they can be delivered via the Web, via the web using our Learning Management System (LMS), via a CD or DVD or they may be installed on your corporate LMS. There is more information available about each of these options in the FAQ and in the training section of this website.
